PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain a polyester which selectively contains only maleate groups excellent in reactivity with acrylates, or the like., in the main chain by copolymerizing an α,β-unsaturated acid anhydride selected from among maleic anhydride (derivatives), and the like, and an epoxide having a specified number of carbon atoms at a specified temperature in the presence of a specified amount of a zinc carboxylate ion. ;SOLUTION: An α,β-unsaturated acid anhydride (A) selected from among maleic anhydride (derivatives) and maleic anhydride (derivative) precursors which are converted into maleic anhydride (derivatives) during polymerization is copolymerized with a 2-25C epoxide (B) at 50-120°C in the presence of a Zn2+ carboxylate in an amount of 0.01-5 mol % based on the sum of both components. If necessary, an aromatic, alicyclic or aliphatic carboxylic anhydride (C), preferably in an amount of 99 mol % or lower of component A, is jointly used.
