PURPOSE: To easily and automatically discriminate copper in an iron scrap by a method wherein the signal intensity ratio of R, G and B color signal values in one point in the TV image of the iron scrap is found with reference to the TV image. ;CONSTITUTION: An iron scrap 1 is irradiated with a light source 2, and an image in a range to be discriminated is picked up by a TV camera 3. Then, an output signal from the camera 3 is image-signal-processed 4, R, G and B color signals 5 and a synchronizing signal 6 are obtained, and positional information 11 on each point on the image is output from the synchronizing signal 6. On the other hand, a signal intensity ratio, e.g. a hue angle θ, is computed from the R, G and B color signals on each point, a material and hue-angle-range correspondence relationship 8 which has been prepared in advance is referred, whether the point is copper or iron is discriminated 9, and a discriminated result is output 10. The hue angle θ is Q=tan-1(2R-G-B)31/2(G-B). This discrimination treatment is executed to all points inside the image, and a copper-contained scrap is separated and treated on the basis of the positional information 11 on each point and the discriminated result 10.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
