PURPOSE:To provide an Al intermetallic compound composite having high toughness and high wear resistance by dispersing peritectic type Al intermetallic compound dispersed phases into an Al intermetallic compound matrix phase and also specifying the content of a peritectic forming element. CONSTITUTION:Peritectic-type Al-Ta intermetallic compound dispersed phases P consisting of Al3Ta phases are dispersed into an Al-Ni intermetallic compound matrix phase M consisting of Al3Ni2 phases and Al3Ni phases. At this time the content of Ta as a peritectic phase forming element contained in the Al3Ta phases is set at 5-30wt.%. In the course of solidification of this composite material, first the Al3Ta phases are crystallized in numerous numbers into a dispersed state and then the Al3Ni3 phases and the Al3Ni phases are crystallized in the order named. By this method, the Al3Ni2 phases and the Al3Ni phases are formed into fine structure because the growth of their crystals is hindered by the Al3Ta phases and, as a result, the hardness and toughness of a composite material 9 can be improved.
