PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to more safely confirm the identity of person in using a fingerprint recording medium such as an IC card. ;SOLUTION: Fingerprint data previously recorded on the fingerprint recording medium such as an IC card are read, the fingerprint picture of a user is newly read to generate fingerprint data, and the person himself/herself is confirmed by comparing the two pieces of the fingerprint data. Fingerprint previously recorded in a server connected through a network is also utilized for comparison. Fingerprint data whose arrangement is changed according to a predetermined rule and which are recorded on a fingerprint recording medium are also read, and when the person himself/herself designates the rule by a rule designating means, a fingerprint data compactor retunes the fingerprint data to its original arrangement according to the rule or changes the arrangement of another piece of fingerprint data and subsequently performs comparison. A fingerprint picture is also newly read, the rule previously recorded in the server is read on the basis of the fingerprint data, the fingerprint data are returned to its original arrangement according to the rule or the arrangement of fingerprint data generated by reading the new fingerprint picture is changed and subsequently, comparison is made.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
