METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR TREATING WASTE WATER CONTAINING DIMETHYL SULFOXIDE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To selectively oxidize only dimethyl sulfoxide to produce dimethyl sulfone without oxidizing organic substances coexisting in waste water by adding a hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution with pH of the waste water adjusted in a specific range in a method for treating the waste water containing dimethyl sulfoxide. ;SOLUTION: Waste water containing dimethyl sulfoxide is introduced into a reactor 2 equipped with an agitator 1 and a pH sensor 3. Alkali stored in an alkali tank 6 is fed to the reactor 2 by driving and controlling a pump 5 by a controller 4 based on the signal of the pH sensor 3 to control pH of the waste water in a range of 9-14. A hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution is added to the reactor 2 corresponding to the amount of dimethyl sulfoxide in the waste water by driving a pump 7. Further the reactor 2 is provided with a sensor 8, and steam is fed to the reactor 2 based on the signal of the sensor 8 by controlling the opening and closing of a control valve 10 by a controller 9 to control the temperature of the waste water in a range of 40-90°C.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
