PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a permanent magnet motor in which vibration and noise can be suppressed and the output can be increased by reducing torque ripple while maximizing total flux and to provide a vertical shaft washing machine and a horizontal shaft washing machine in which vibration and noise can be suppressed and the capacity can be increased. SOLUTION: Permanent magnets 10 of a rotor 1 are arranged radially with respect to a rotary shaft 8 such that the same magnetic poles of the permanent magnets 10 face each other in the circumferential direction. Pole pieces 11 made of a high permeability material are clamped between respective permanent magnets 10. The face of the pole piece 11 is formed cylindrically on the air gap 12 such that the length of an air gap 12 between the cylindrical face 11a and a stator 2 is smallest at the central part in the circumferential direction and increases at the opposite side parts.
