PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an inorganic compound, in which a plant-based organic raw material can be used at least as a carbon source on the production of a carbide or the composite material of the carbide with an oxide. SOLUTION: This method for producing the carbide or the composite inorganic material of the carbide with the oxide, characterized by reacting a plant-based organic raw material (for example, the outer bark of Cryptomeria japonica, a material containing lignin and/or cellulose) as such at least as a carbon raw material with a component containing one or more elements for forming the carbide (for example, TiC) or the composite inorganic material (TiC+α-Al2O3) of the carbide with the oxide under the condition of a direct self-propagating high-temperature synthesis reaction (SHS).
