PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a soft output Viterbi algorithm decoder adopting a trace- back method that can obtain a soft decision and a hard decision at a higher speed without the need for using a memory. ;SOLUTION: In Soft Output Viterbi algorithm decoder that includes a branch metric arithmetic section 300, an Add-Compare-Select(ACS) section 302, a state evaluation quantity storage section (SMM) 304, a survivor state generating section 306 and a soft output Viterbi algorithm state metric(SOVA-SM) section 308, the SOVA-SM section 308 is configured with registers and multiplexers in place of a memory storing survivor information with respect to all states and traces survivor paths and contention paths to update the soft decision.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
