PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for calculating remaining photographing-available frame number in the case that image data with different data amounts photographed at various resolution typically in a digital still camera are compressed by a compression method where compressed data are variable length data and stored in a data recording medium in the digital still camera. SOLUTION: A digital still camera is provided with a CPU 40 that applies compression processing to photographed image data by one frame with a prescribed data amount by means of the JPEG method to compress the data as variable length data where a maximum data size is 30 kbytes or below and with a flush memory 41 that is used to store the compressed image data to its image area 412. The CPU 40 counts number of frames of image data having already been written in the image area 412 and a data capacity not in use to obtain the remaining photographing-available frame number from the frame number of the image data having already been written in the image area 412, to obtain the remaining photographing-available frame number also from the data capacity of the image area 412 not in use and displays either of the remaining photographing-available frame numbers which is smaller as the photographing-available frame number.
