PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic proofreading device for a Chinese document, etc., which can efficiently detect and correct an error of a document of Chinese. SOLUTION: A character pair read conversion part converts a source document into a reading symbol string. A candidate word generation part cuts syllables out of the reading symbol string to detect possible candidate words and their relative information, deletes candidate characters by using their frequencies of use, and detects possible candidate words and their relative information by using a prescribed mask means for a reading symbol string and a type combination symbol string of successive single-KANJI candidates. A candidate word determination part detects a corresponding reading symbol string for an obtained combination of candidate characters and detects all possible candidate words and their relative information. An optimum candidate character string determination part generates a directed net according to the start positions and end positions of respective candidate words corresponding to the source document character string and uses a cumulative maximum value of prescribed weight to generate an optimum path. A matching part detects and marks mutually different characters by comparing the optimum path character string with the source document character string.
