PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain cotton plants suitable for producing high quality textiles and the likes excellent in strengths and dyeability by stably maintaining a specific exogeneous catalase gene and producing cotton fibers improved in fiber characteristics such as fiber denier, uniformity in fiber lengths and the like. ;SOLUTION: Cotton fibers stably maintaining an exogeneous catalase gene having (A) a base sequence which is under control of a promoter capable of functioning in cotton fibers and expressed by 57-1541 base number in the base sequence expressed by the formula or (B) a base sequence capable of hybridizing with the aforesaid base sequence under a stringent condition and improved in fiber characteristics compared with those of wile-type strains are produced. This cotton plant belonging to the genus Gossypium is a transgenic plant obtained by transforming the wild-type strain with an expressgxon vector containing the aforesaid exogeneous catalase gene. The cotton fibers improved in fiber characteristics compared with those of the wild-type strains are preferably produced by harvesting seeds obtained by self-pollination of those cotton plants and separating cotton fibers from seed coats of the seeds.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
