PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recognition device which can efficiently find shape, a three-dimensional attitude, and attitude variation quantity of a recognized object fast without being affected by the surface properties of the recognized object body and image pickup conditions such as lighting environment. ;SOLUTION: This device is equipped with an outline stroke detecting means 102 which detects outline information on the recognized object from a distance image of the recognized object, a vector direction quantizing means 103 which quantizes all the vector constituting an outline stroke obtained by the outline stroke detecting means as to a vector direction, a vector direction distribution normalizing means 104 which calculates the frequency distribution of all the quantized vectors constituting the outline stroke obtained by the vector direction quantizing means, and an attitude information detecting means 105 which detects the three-dimensional attitude of the recognized object on the basis of the obtained vector direction normalized distribution information by the vector direction distribution normalizing mean.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
