PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably control the replacement of an ink cartridge. SOLUTION: In a printer 10 of the type in which a sensor for detecting replacement of ink cartridges 24, 26 in the carriage 22, the carriage 22 is moved to a position where only the ink cartridge 24 (26) selected by a user can be replaced in a utility for replacing the cartridge. In the utility for replacing the cartridge, whether the actually selected cartridge 24 (26) is replaced or not is judged and inputted to the user. Thus, an initializing operation can be avoided for the cartridge 24 (26) not replaced.
