PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting radar system characteristics and a recording medium, with which the state of characteristics such as the deterioration of a sensor in a radar system can be detected, without incorporating a reference reflection object. SOLUTION: Plural pairs of distances to a preceding car and reception level are stored with correspondence, the state of distributing plural pieces of these data is approximated by a linear expression, and the change in the characteristics of the sensor including the fault of the sensor is detected from a change in the Y-intercept of this linear expression. Additionally, by comparing the value of the Y intercept with a decision level in steps 200-230, the present state is divided into levels A-D and further used for a wiper signal or temperature signal of the sensor and the factor of the change in the characteristics of the sensor is decided, on the basis of a factor decision map or the like in steps 250-280.
