PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately estimate the cutoff length against water in a L-shaped and T-shaped cables by estimating the cutoff length against water of the objective cables from the correlation between the preliminarily determined occupancy of a water-absorbing resin in a slot and the cutoff length of cables. ;SOLUTION: The cutoff length of cables and the occupancy of a water-absorbing resin in a slot show good correlation so that if the occupancy of a water-absorbing resin in a slot of a water-absorbing tape in the objective cable is known, the cutoff length of the cable can be estimated with high accuracy. Therefore, the occupancy of the water-absorbing resin in a slot of the water-absorbing tape for the objective cable is determined from the measured height of water supply of the water-absorbing tape, the cross sectional area of the slot of the optical fiber cable on which the water- absorbing tape is to be applied, and the cross sectional area of the optical fiber wire housed in the slot. Then, from the obtained occupancy and the preliminarily determined correlation of the cutoff length of cables and the occupancy of the water-absorbing resin in a slot, the cutoff length of the objective L-shaped and/or T-shaped cables is estimated.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
