PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process and a memory configuration for mounting a chip kill error detecting function on a low-end server without requiring a non- standard component and an additional memory device. SOLUTION: Generally, the number of error correction bits required for a chip kill function depends on the data width of a memory chip to be corrected and on a CRC algorithm to be used. When the required number of bits for error correction are not provided by a memory system, a double-word operation is executed to continuous memory locations in a single DIMM module by another option of this invention. The system where the number of ECC bits at every data transfer is essentially twice as large as that in the conventional one is provided by reading a memory module by double-word. This kind of low-end system is not generally provided with the required number of error correction bits for executing a chip kill operation. Then the chip kill operation is executed by the double-word method in the low-end system where the chip kill operation is not normally executed.
