PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fully remove coloring generated by the pressure, strain, shift of stoichiometric composition and the like during sintering and the coloring generat ed in fabrication with die and the like.;SOLUTION: Rare earth oxysulfide sintered body is heat-treated in mixed atmosphere of sulfur and oxygen in temperature of 900 to 1200°C and an insular rare earth oxide phase is formed on the surface of the sintered body so as to produce a ceramic scintillator 1. Therefore, this ceramic scintillator 1 is provided with a sintered body consisting of a rare earth oxysulfide and a rare earth oxide phase formed on the surface of the sintered body. Also, on the surface of the sintered body, the rare earth sulfide phase and the rare earth oxide phase are in dispersed state and so light output characteristic is improved.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
