PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition capable of dissolving a foamed polystyrene without using heat energy within a short period of time, which neither generates nor emits a toxic gas, hardly causes the vaporization of a solvent during the step of dissolving and leaves no smell behind after operation of the dissolving step. SOLUTION: The composition comprises a halogenated hydrocarbon and a monohydric alcohol as the components. As a halogenated hydrocarbon, a dichloromethane, a methyl chloride, or the like, is used and, as a monohydric alcohol, an ethyl alcohol, a methyl alcohol, or the like, is used. In addition, a polyhydric alcohol can be used in combination with the above. The polyhydric alcohol is desirably a dihydric alcohol.
