FIBER BRAGG GRATING FILTER(FBGF) USING MUSCLE WIRE AND HAVING WIDE TUNABLE RANGE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical filter having a wide tunable range and a method of manufacturing the filter.;SOLUTION: A fiber Bragg grating member with a selected grating pitch is connected to plural actuating members such as one made of a shape memory alloy. A current source or a heat source to supply a controlled amount of the current or the heat is included in order to produce a variation in the length of the actuating members. Consequently the length of the fiber Bragg grating member is also varied. The grating pitch is varied corresponding thereto and a variation in the Bragg resonance wavelength of the grating is produced thereby. Corresponding thereto, a reflected light signal selected from reaching multiplexed light signals is tuned to a different wavelength. A closed loop controller is provided for controlling energy input to the actuating members to adjust tuning of the reflected light signal.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
