PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulator and a semiconductor laser equipment with an optical modulator which generates little corrugated degradation without increase in loss, or lowering of the extinction ratio, and to provide optical communications equipment having a large transmission distance of modulated light by using the same. ;SOLUTION: A light-absorbing layer 63 of a multiple quantum well structure, which has an A well layer 635 and a plurality of B well layers 633 with an absorption spectrum peak wavelength shorter than the absorption spectrum peak wavelength of the A well layer 635, is provided. The refractive index of the A well layer 635 of the light-absorbing layer 63 is fluctuated negatively by this configuration, by reducing the fluctuation of the positive refractive index of a light-absorbing layer 63 entire part, the optical modulator with little chirpings is constituted.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
