PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method which detect the character recording area of the existent document, and to provide a recording medium and a document format generating device.;SOLUTION: Image of entry-completed documents obtained by entering different characters into the existent document are inputted to generate a common image (Fig. 7) and a difference image (Fig. 8) according to the inputted images. According to the generated common image and difference image, character recording areas 71, 72, and 73 are detected and properties are set to the character recording areas.
