PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and an apparatus for controlling a power generating amount of a hybrid vehicle, capable of smoothly starting even if travel mode accompanied with power generation is selected when started. SOLUTION: First, a starting state from an idling state is detected (step S1: 'NO' to a step S4: 'NO' to step S6: YES). That is, if it is not idle mode at present, a high load is applied to an engine and was an idle mode at the previous time, it is decided that a starting operation is conducted. Then, a generating amount is suppressed. That is, the previous decision is conducted (step S6: 'YES'), charging is cut until time set to a timer is elapsed (step S7: 'NO' to step S8). Thus, a generating amount required for charging when started is dispensed with, the generating amount is suppressed. As a result, engine load is reduced, and smooth starting can be executed.
