This invention refers to a mechanical heart valve with three enhanced tabs (100) and a perfected tab (110) for use with such a valve. The valve (100) and tab (110) of the present invention provide improved flow characteristics, minimize blood agglutination behind tabs, and provide more natural opening and closing times. The valve includes a valve housing (105) containing a joint mechanism (130, 200,and 300) to allow tab rotation and retention (110). Valve housing (105) also includes windows or openings (125) that allow complete washing of the joint mechanism (130, 200 and 300) in addition to tabs (110). New tabs (110) are airfoil-like and have a complex S-shaped curvature on its outer surface. This new geometry, when combined with the location of the articulated axis of the tab, causes a tendency for the tab (110) to rotate in the direction of the closed position. This way, tab (110) starts closing much earlier than a conventional tab and is substantially closed before the inverted flow,similar to the function of a natural valve.
