The object of the present invention is to provide a method for inhibiting the spread of cancers and tumors in mammals, especially humans and warm-blooded animals. The method comprises sequential administration of tumor size reducing chemotherapeutic agents and a benzimidazole derivative, preferably carbendazim or 2-methoxycarbonylaminobenzimidazole, in any order. Advantageously, benzimidazole can induce apoptosis (programmed death) of cancer cell lines, thereby reducing the growth of cancer cells.
