The present invention relates to a catalytic process for the preparation of epoxides, wherein the unsaturated hydrocarbons are oxidized in the gas phase with molecular oxygen in the presence of molecular hydrogen. The invention also relates to catalysts coated with nanoparticulate gold particles which are necessary for carrying out the process. In order to carry out the process according to the invention, catalysts prepared from calcined titanium oxide hydrate and coated with nanoparticulate gold particles are used.
