The supporting beams (1) have a lightweight structure comprising at least one layer of fibrous material embedded in a polymer matrix. A floor designed for walking on comprises a number of parallel beams supporting a layer of stone-like material, e.g. hardened concrete. At least one of the beams has a lightweight structure, comprising at least one layer of fibrous material embedded in a polymer matrix, extending essentially over the entire beam length. The fibrous material provides a significant contribution to the rigidity and/or thickness of the beam. Independent claims are also included for: (a) the beam, and (b) the use of the beam for renovating floors in buildings designed to be walked on.
