The crates have an open top side and the device for immersing the crate in water is coupled to a tilt device for tilting the crate into a position where the top side is vertical, before it is immersed in the water. Crates are at least partially submerged in a vat (2) of water, and whilst the crate is submerged, fruit is supplied underwater via an at least partially submerged crate opening.
