Lithium iodate is used as an electrolyte material and the electrode material is chosen from lead (alloy) or electrically conducting diamond. The preparation of periodate ions by the oxidation of iodate ions in an electrolysis cell comprises the use of lithium iodate as the electrolyte material, in the presence of an electrode material chosen from lead (alloy) or electrically conducting diamond.
