The points of the star of the passage (7) extending through the bottom of the tray cavity (2) are located within the periphery of the narrowest part of this cavity. A holder (1) for plants with clumps of soil attached comprises an essentially flat body with a regular pattern of cavities in its top side (3). The base (6) of each cavity has a passage with a star-shaped cross-section extending through it, the central axis of this channel being the same as the central axis for the cavity. The points of the star are located within the periphery of the narrowest part of the cavity.
