Powder fractions (2) are added to an inner cylinder (1) inside an outer cylinder (3), and the space in between the two cylinders is filled with explosive (4), which is detonated in order to compact the powder fractions. A method for the dynamic shock or compaction compression of metal, ceramic or polymer powder fractions, e.g. for the dynamic compression of metal powder fractions to form a quick or hard steel, comprises adding the fractions or combinations thereof in specific mixture ratios and distributions to a first (inner) vertical cylinder. This is then placed in the bottom of a second (outer) vertical cylinder having a larger diameter and height, and the space left between the two cylinders is filled with explosive before adding a detonator (9) via the center of the top end of the second cylinder. Detonation of the explosive generates a shockwave front passing through the powder fractions. The quantity and type of explosive is selected to give a very high shock compression of the powder fractions.
