The combined volume and surface area of the vat (1) and channel (2) leading from it are sufficient to receive a substantial part of the pears and apples. A horizontal rotary brush (26) is located underwater inside the channel. A machine for emptying crates of fruit, e.g. apples or pears, comprises a vat which can be filled with water, a means for emptying crates of fruit (4) into the vat, a discharge channel for delivering the fruit from the vat to a dosing device, and a pump (23) for generating a flow of water from the vat to the channel. The combined volume of the vat and channel is sufficient to receive a substantial part of the pears from the crate, whilst the combined horizontal surface of the vat and channel is large enough to receive a substantial part of the apples from the crate. A horizontal rotary brush is located underwater inside the channel.
