Treatment of liver disease by administration of a vasodilator which increases the oxygen supply to the liver; pharmaceutical compositions

A method for the treatment of liver disease selected from the group consisting of cirrhosis of the liver, toxic and medicamentary liver damage, a liver parenchymic disorder and hepatitis. The method includes administering to a non-human or animal subject in need thereof a therapeutically active or prophylactically effective low dose amount of a vasodilating agent that selectively increases the supply of oxygenated blood to the liver by increasing hepatic arterial inflow. The vasodilating agent is a calcium blocker, a derivative of benzothisaepine, see formula described, preferably nifedipine, felodipine or verapamil.
