Single step synthesis gas-to-dimethyl ether process with methanol introduction

A process for converting hydrogen and carbon monoxide into dimethyl ether and methanol in a single step process comprising contacting the hydrogen and carbon monoxide with a bifunctional catalyst system having a methanol synthesis functionality and a methanol dehydration functionality in a dimethyl ether reactor and introducing a methanol containing stream into the reactor such that the methanol concentration throughout the reactor is greater than 1.0% and wherein the methanol comprises make-up methanol.
