A process for the sulphurisation of a metal hydrotreating catalyst which process comprises treating the catalyst with a sulphurisation agent, wherein an orthophthalic acid ester of the formula described is added to the sulphurisation agent. Wherein, R1 and R2 which maybe the same or different, represents an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl radical which comprises up to 18 carbon atoms and which is unsubstituted or substituted by one or more heteroatoms.
