DNA sequence useful for the expression of a polypeptide product exhibiting a hematopoietic biological activity of naturally occurring stem cell factor in procaryotic or eukaryotic host cell. Use of the polypeptide for the production of a drug useful in the hematopoietic therapy of a mammal. Pharmaceutical composition containing an effective amount of said polypeptide and a pharmaceutically acceptable solvent, additive or carrier. A method of transfecting hematopoietic cells with an exogenous DNA during which said hematopoietic cells are cultivated by said polypeptide and the cultivated cells are transfected with exogenous DNA sequence. A method of hematopoietic cells cultivation in vitro in a cultivation medium which contains said polypeptide. An assay containing components for the cultivation of bone marrow cells or peripheral blood progenitors containing i) said polypeptide, optionally on a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, ii) components useful in preparing medium for the cultivation of bone marrow cells or peripheral blood progenitors. An antibody selectively binding for said polypeptide.
