A bio-degradable mineral wool has high alumina and alkali metal oxide contents and can be prepared from readily available primary materials and manufactured by internal centrifugation. A mineral wool, which can dissolve in a physiological medium, has the composition (by wt.) 39-55 (preferably 40-52)% SiO2, 16-25 (preferably 17-22) % Al2O3, 3-35 (preferably 10-25) % CaO, 0-15 (preferably 0-10)% MgO, 0-15 (preferably 6-12) % Na2O, 0-15 (preferably 6-12) % K2O, 0-3 (preferably 0-2) % P2O5, 0-15 % Fe2O3, 0-8 (preferably 0-4) % B2O3 and 0-3 % TiO2, the sum of Na2O + K2O being 13.0-17 %.
