The data layer includes a material (15)responsive to at least one predetermined data elimination factor and includes one of a decayable dye material, a liquid crystal material, aphotosensitive material or a plurality of magnetoresistive memory cells. The data layer is characterized as recording data and eliminatingaccess to data in response to at least one of a predetermined use or time factor. In addition, included is a method for fabricating a perishablemedia information storage mechanism including the steps of providing a substrate (12), forming a data layer (14) on a surface of thesubstrate. Forming a reflective layer (16) on an uppermost surface (17) of the data layer, and forming a protective coating (19) on anuppermost surface of the reflective layer.
