POLARIZATION INSENSITIVE FABRY-PEROT WAVELENGTH TUNABLE FILTER WITH NEMATIC LIQUID CRYSTAL

There is provided a polarization insen-sitive Fabry-Perot wavelength tunable filterwith a nematic liquid crystal, in which trans-parent electrodes (2) are respectively formedon the inner surfaces of two substrates (1),reflecting layers (3) are respectively coatedon the transparent electrodes (2), one reflect-ing layer (3) having a homeotropic alignmentlayer (4) coated thereon to homeotropicallyalign a liquid crystal, the other reflecting layer(3) having a homogeneous alignment layer (5)coated thereon and being processed to axiallyalign the liquid crystal, and a nematic liquidcrystal is inserted between the two substrates(1), to tune the wavelength of incident lightdepending on the magnitude of the voltage ap-plied thereto. This Fabry-Perot filter has thetransmission property completely insensitiveto the polarization direction of the incidentlight in the whole operating voltage range.
