A mixture of the analysis sample and a flux is smelted suitably at temperatures between 800 deg C and 1300 deg C, say at about 1000 deg centigrade in a crucible with a hole at the bottom that is tapered in order to prevent the mixture from coming out, but to facilitate controlled running of molten material through the opening. Batch smelting of the analysis sample and flux allows the running molten material from the crucible to form a sample body on a horizontal surface. A casting plate or mould can be used fo casting sample bodies positioned horizontally beneath the crucible.
