A two-phase polymer combination soluble in an aqueous alkali is composed of (a) an alkali-soluble copolymer or terpolymer of an alpha - beta -unsaturated monocarboxylic acid with COOH groups uniformly distributed in the molecule chain, as continuous phase, and (b) a copolymer or terpolymer which is not soluble in the aqueous alkali and has epoxy groups along its polymer chain, as discontinuous finely dispersed phase, whereas (c) the free epoxy groups at the surface of the polymer particles of the discontinuous phase are linked with part of the carboxyl groups of the polymer of the continuous phase by ester formation, and the remaining COOH groups remain unaltered. The two-phase polymer can be produced by melting together under the action of shearing forces the previously produced, COOH groups-containing polymer and the epoxy groups-containing polymer.
