In the engine block (1) of an internal combustion engine, a balance shaft unit for the moment compensation of the second order is placed. It consists of a drive unit (10) and a balancer shaft (11) twice the crankshaft speed. In order to achieve clean drive and accurate storage at ease of installation, there is a drive unit (10) consists of a ring gear (24) and, arranged in the interior of the pinion (28), said pinion (28) is part of the balancing shaft (11). The drive unit (10) is mounted in a drive housing (21) which is insertable together with the balancer shaft (11) as a preassembled unit into the engine block (1).
