Method and system for providing location, tracking, assistance and bidirectional communication services for tourists.A method and system for personalised information and guidance, depending on the location of the user, used for example, as a personal guide for tourists, which includes in a Portable User Interface a location device such as the GPS/dGPS satellite positioning system to locate the user by means of a portable receiver. By means of a bidirectional communication system such as a mobile telephone, the user is kept in contact with a service providing centre by sending data such as the position of the user, personal preferences of the user or access to emergency services; the said services can be managed by a human operator or even automatically. The components permit the user to exercise control over the information he receives, and also to access services outside the system, such as, for example, the telephone service. The system can provide services to individual users or groups or gatherings.
