In a radiotelephone network, processing stepspreviously applied to digital voice transmissions receivedby a regional radio transmitter/receiver but not applied toanalog voice transmissions received by thetransmitter/receiver are applied to such analog voicetransmissions at the transmitter/receiver itself such thatanalog voice transmissions and digital voice transmissionsmay be transmitted identically between the regional radiotransmitter/receiver and a regional switching center. Inparticular, a digital speech encoder/compressor and acorresponding digital speech decoder/decompressor (togetherreferred to as a codec) provided at remotetransmitter/receivers and the regional switching center arealso provided at the regional radio transmitter/receiver soas to apply the same processing to analog voicetransmissions received from the remote transmitter/receiversas is applied to digital voice transmissions at the remotetransmitter/receivers.
