METHOD FOR THE ISOLATION OF DEGRADATIVE MICROBIAL CONSORTIA AND APPARATUS THEREFORE

There is disclosed a method for isolatingmicroorganisms which are capable of metabolizing a selectedcontaminant at a variety of concentrations. An apparatus in theform of an extended concentration gradient gel cell is disclosedfor the purpose of sustaining the contaminant in variousconcentration levels on the gel. The microorganisms selfcolonize on the gel cell at a concentration suitable formetabolic activity of the microorganisms. This permits easyidentification and isolation of microorganisms capable ofmetabolizing various concentrations of a contaminant.
