An electrically small antenna is disclosed that is constructed from ageneralized contrawound toroidal helix (1, 2) made from a single continuousconductor divided into two length portions each of which are substantially thesame length and which have a generalized helical pattern. The helical pitchsenses the two length portions are opposite to one another. The two lengthportions are insulated from one another and overlap one another on the surfaceof a generalized toroid. A signal is fed to the antenna at a port defined bythe node locations (N1, N2) where the respective length portions join oneanother, or at a diametrically opposite point. A compact, broadband embodimentof the antenna is disclosed, as are other applications including a coaxialcavity resonator using the antenna as a feed element.
