A method and system for processing mail pieces or substrates containingdata printed thereon involves scanning a mail piece or substrate andobtaining information concerning the printed data. The information isprocessed to determine if the data is readable. Non readable datainformation is processed to determine if the non readable data is due topredetermined causes of a first type or predetermined causes of a secondtype. Substrates or mail pieces with non readable data due topredetermined causes of the first type may be processed in a first mannerand processing substrates or mail pieces with non readable data due topredetermined causes of the second type may be processed in a secondmanner. The printing may be optical character reconizable, bar code ofany type or any other form of printed data.
