A fault indicator for detecting the occurrence of afault current in a monitored conductor and providing a contactclosure and a light indication indicative thereof includes arotatably mounted indicator flag. The flag is positioned ineither a reset indicating or a fault indicating state by afour-pole magnetic pole piece, which is magnetized to an appropriatemagnetic orientation by momentary application of a current to anactuator winding on the pole piece. A first magneticallyactuated reed switch in an auxiliary magnetic circuit associatedwith a first pole of the magnetic pole piece and including theactuator winding and a first bias magnet closes upon occurrenceof the fault current to connect an internal lithium battery to anLED visible from the exterior of the fault indicator housing. Asecond magnetically actuated reed switch associated with a secondpole of the magnetic pole piece and including the actuatorwinding and a second bias magnet closes upon occurrence of thefault current for external signaling or control purposes.
