Improved techniques for optimizing performance of a wireless network. In anillustrative embodiment, a derivative-based optimization process is applied tooptimize anobjective function of a network performance metric with respect to a number ofnetworktuning parameter variables. The optimization may be based on first or higherorderderivatives of the objective function with respect to the selected networkparametervariables. The objective function may include, e.g., one or more of amaximization ofnetwork coverage, a maximization of network capacity, and a minimization ofnetworkresources. Additional network parameters which are not variables inoptimization processserve as constraints to the optimization process. Advantageously, theinvention substantiallyimproves the process of designing, adjusting and optimizing the performance ofwirelessnetworks.
