A communication system for processing a communication signal derived fromspeech and noise enhances the quality of the communication signal by providinga filter (50) dividing the communication signal into a plurality of frequencyband signals representing the communication signal in a plurality of frequencybands. A calculator generates a likelihood signal having values representingthe likelihoods that the communication signal is derived from speech (70). Thecalculator assigns weighting values (120) to the frequency band signals inresponse to the values of the likelihood signal. The calculator also altersthe frequency band signals in response to the weighting values to generateweighted frequency band signals, and combines (160) the weighted frequencybands signals to generate a communication signal with enhanced quality (170).
