Errors in an RSSI measured by a mobile station in a wireless network that uses TSPC are compensated by identifying the mobile station using one or more characteristics such as a manufacturer of the mobile station, and then using correction factors that correspond to the identification. Thus, where the errors are introduced by specific measurement techniques common to mobile stations made by that manufacturer, corresponding correction factors can be retrieved and used to correct or compensate the RSSI. In accordance with another embodiment, when the reported RSSI is an average of values measured over time, the RSSI can be further corrected or compensated by averaging the corrections values associated with each of the individual values making up the reported RSSI.
